Current Board President of the Rockford Park District Board of Commissioner
Martesha Brown is a Rockford native, community leader, banking executive, entrepreneur, and longtime advocate for parks and recreation. For more than 25 years, her connection to parks and recreation has included participation, volunteering, professional leadership, community service, and elected board service.
Martesha’s connection to the Rockford Park District began long before she joined the Board of Commissioners. Growing up in Rockford, she participated in Park District programs and experienced firsthand the role parks and recreation can play in the lives of young people and families. Over the years, that connection grew from participant to seasonal team member, then to a full-time Park District professional, and eventually to elected commissioner and Board President.
Her experience within the Rockford Park District has been broad, spanning camp programs, ice facilities, aquatics, indoor playgrounds, community centers, marketing, customer service, maintenance, and operational leadership. That journey has given Martesha a unique perspective on the Park District from many sides.
She understands what it means to experience Park District programs as a child, serve residents on the front lines, support facilities and programs behind the scenes, lead operations as a professional, and now provide governance and advocacy as an elected commissioner. Her relationship with parks and recreation has truly come full circle.
Martesha currently serves as President of the Rockford Park District Board of Commissioners. The Park District lists her as Board President, with her current term expiring in 2027.
Her commitment to parks and recreation extends beyond Rockford. Martesha is also involved at the state level through the Illinois Association of Park Districts, an organization dedicated to strengthening park and recreation agencies through advocacy, education, research, and leadership development.
Professionally, Martesha has built a career around economic development, banking, community engagement, strategic planning, collaboration, communications, and organizational leadership. Her leadership experience has included roles with the Rockford Area Convention & Visitors Bureau, the Rockford Park District, Alpine Bank, and Midland States Bank. She currently serves as Market President for Midland States Bank, helping oversee the Rockford and Belvidere market.
Martesha’s community involvement has included service with organizations and initiatives such as Goodwill of Northern Illinois, Habitat for Humanity, Think Big, SwedishAmerican Health Foundation, Region 1 Planning Council, RAVE, Leadership Rockford, and other civic and nonprofit efforts throughout the region.
She is also the founder of MB Strategic Solutions, where she uses her professional experience to support organizations and leaders in areas including strategic planning, board development, leadership development, executive coaching, project management, and organizational effectiveness.
Throughout her career, Martesha has been recognized for her leadership and community service. Honors have included Rockford’s Forty Under 40, Rockford Register Star’s “People You Should Know,” Soul News Network’s “25 Black Leaders to Watch,” Inspire815, WREX 13 Heroes, the Juneteenth Helping Hand Award, YWCA Woman of Achievement, Rockford Chamber of Commerce Community Hero, and Northwest Quarterly’s “25 Most Interesting People.”
At the heart of Martesha’s work is a belief that strong communities are built through connection, opportunity, thoughtful leadership, and a willingness to serve. She believes parks and recreation play an important role in helping people enjoy life, strengthening families and neighborhoods, supporting economic vitality, creating opportunities for young people, and ensuring that everyone has a place to belong.
For Martesha, serving on the Rockford Park District Board is about protecting what our community loves, creating what it needs next, and helping ensure that parks, programs, and experiences continue to bring people together, strengthen Rockford, and help people enjoy life for generations to come.
One thing I would consider for the actual website layout is breaking this into two visual sections around the midpoint, perhaps “A Lifelong Connection to Parks” and “Leadership Beyond the Park District.” That would make a fairly substantial bio much easier to read on a phone.
